US renewables ‘to overtake coal’

Government projections suggest that the United States will, for the first time ever, produce more electricity from renewable sources than coal this year. It is a change partially driven by changes in consumption driven by the reaction to the covid pandemic.

Ten years ago coal produced nearly half the US’ electricity and seems unassailable. The change comes despite the Trump administration’s encouragement of the coal industry by reducing the pollution rules that cover coal burning plants.
