Italian company pledges to boost investment in green energy and “tackle the challenge” of limiting emissions
Italian energy giant Enel has pledged to phase out coal investments and lead the power industry’s efforts to limit global warming.
In a statement issued with campaign group Greenpeace, which has hitherto been a staunch critic of the part state-controlled company, Enel outlined its aim to achieve “carbon neutrality” before 2050, advocating an industrial strategy focused on boosting investment in renewable sources, energy efficiency, smart grids and storage systems, as well as “gradually phasing out further investment in coal”.
